Pro Vice-Chancellor Matt Webster is the latest staff member to open up to the ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï’s successful On Campus With… podcast.
Created by Schools and Colleges Co-ordinator Lucy Dixon, the podcast gives academics a platform to tell their back stories, share their research and discuss the more obscure and unusual aspects of their subjects.
Lucy hosts the show with Ellie Price, Schools and Colleges Partnership Manager. The pair have more than 20 years’ combined experience in the education sector and have teased out some surprising anecdotes from guests.
Past episodes have included lecturer in Forensic Investigation Selina Robinson explaining how she uses gaming technology in her work; Film Production’s Rob Ferrin talking about the Teletubbies and giving his verdict on the acting ability of sheep; and Classicist Dr Polly Stoker discussing how Gladiator blood may have been used as an aphrodisiac.
Meanwhile, Richard Cheetham, Senior Fellow in Sports Coaching, who has worked with a host of international athletes, soon got onto welly wanging when he appeared.
Matt Webster, who was the final guest of the second season of recordings, spoke about his journey from applying to university in clearing, to his scientific career within the pharmaceutical sector to his role at Winchester as Pro Vice-Chancellor.
"It was a pleasure to share my experiences on the On Campus With… podcast,” said Matt. “I hope my journey encourages others to explore the opportunities available at ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï . And for those who tune in, apologies for the bad science jokes that went over the hosts' heads – I promise they were funnier in the lab!"
Lucy said: “The podcast has been really fun to work on! It’s been great to chat to a variety of academics across the university, finding out about their research and how that has influenced their teaching and time at Winchester. Ellie and I have watched this project flourish, and we are looking forward to recording and publishing future episodes.”
One of the show’s biggest fans is Jon Cheek, Director of education events directory, UniTasterDays Ltd, who praised the podcast’s “crisp recording” and “great guests” and said it was a great advert for the university.
Jon said: “I have changed my opinion on university podcasts now – anyone listening and considering Winchester would, I’m sure, be inspired to join. Next time I am asked about uni podcasts, I will use yours as the benchmark!”
