Learning and Teaching
High-quality teaching that is engaging, purposeful and inclusive.

The Learning and Teaching Development Unit (LTDU) works closely with colleagues across the ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï to implement the Education and Student Experience (ESE) Strategy (2024 - 2028). The ESE Strategy sets out the ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï's vision to build students’ curiosity, confidence and capabilities through consistently high-quality teaching.
The Learning and Teaching Development Unit is comprised of two teams:
- Learning and Teaching Development (LTD) – responsible for enhancing learning, teaching and assessment practices across the ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï.
- Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) - responsible for developing and disseminating ways in which staff can use technology effectively in the delivery of education provision.
Meet the team:
- Dr Dave Barber, Head of Technology-Enhanced Learning and Digital Literacies
- Dr Elizabeth Munro, Educational Developer and Convener of the Winchester Institute for Contemplative Education and Practice (WICEP)
- Lee Saunders, Technology-Enhanced Learning Trainer and Developer
- Juliet Winter, Senior Researcher Learning and Teaching Development
Our provision includes:
- Professional development and recognition, including AdvanceHE Fellowship.
- Collaboration with programme teams in curriculum and assessment design.

- Reward, recognition and reflective practice through robust CPD workshop and training offerings.
Technology-Enhanced Learning
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is implemented in an evidence-based and systematic way at Winchester, despite the rapidly changing environment. The purpose of using technology is central to any innovation we support - the use of TEL at Winchester starts with asking why? Students play an active role in shaping the digital environment, and in supporting innovation at Winchester.
Canvas
The ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï uses Canvas as its virtual learning environment. Canvas has been designed with current students in mind and features an intuitive user interface and a range of mobile apps for both staff and students. Completely cloud-based, Canvas ensures that students studying at the ¾¢±¬´ó¹Ï always have access to their course content if they have an internet-enabled device.
